I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and have a professional diploma in Gestalt Therapy from The Albany Centre in St Albans.
After a career spanning media, fashion and most recently in pastoral care in secondary education I made the decision to train to become a counsellor.
Gestalt Therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which self-awareness and self-acceptance are considered keys to personal growth. The focus is to help you understand and re-evaluate your perspectives by challenging you to look again at yourself, your actions, thoughts and feelings.
I view each of my clients as a distinct being, with unique insight into their own existence and behaviour. The purpose of this kind of therapy is to provide you with an environment in which you can explore unfinished business from the past, your perceptions and your feelings, in the here and now, fully understanding your own responsibility for the way in which you react.
I work with you to recognise where you are stuck, bringing this into your awareness by inviting you to assess what you are feeling in the present. You hold the keys to your own state of autonomy and can free yourself from the fixed position you are experiencing by recognising how you are reacting, how appropriate that response really is and how you could react instead. Part of my role as your therapist is to provide a safe space for you to test the alternative.
There is inevitably some looking back to understand how patterns became set and affect how we behave in the present. Understanding the past can bring understanding, growth and change. I will work with you to challenge unhelpful past behaviours and learn new ways of "being" in the world.
Gestalt Therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which self-awareness and self-acceptance are considered keys to personal growth. The human mind and human behaviour are viewed as one complete whole. The word Gestalt is used in modern German to mean the way a thing has been “placed,” or “put together.” Gestalt therapy encourages the client to re-evaluate their perspective by challenging the client to look again at themselves, their actions, thoughts and feelings. I work with all types of couples: heterosexual, LGBTQ+; married or co-habiting; separating or divorcing; with or without children to consider.
You may benefit from relationship counselling if you are struggling with:
Deciding to end a relationship is difficult, no matter what your circumstances are. For those of you who have decided to go your separate ways, relationship counselling for breakups becomes an opportunity not only to form an understanding of what has happened, but to begin to heal, giving space for the grieving process that many couples may experience. Those who have children may also want to address tangible aspects of the separation including co-parenting.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial assessment appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours, and all contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.
